it means something different to everyone. and yet it unites us all. whether your memories of HOME fill you with love or fill you with hurt, if you sleep in a queen size bed or on the floor, if you couldn't wait to leave or wish terribly you could go back, if it's clay or brick or bamboo . . . somehow our home or lack of home unites. it's something we share. it's a reality we understand. no matter where we come from or where we are going.
so what's the point? i mean, what's the point of this blog? why is it here and what does it have to do with SOMO?
everything.
it's why we at SOMO do what we do. in some part, it's what interests you to invest in SOMO and the children of H.E.A.L.S. because i think there is a part of us - our secret heart of hearts - that wants to be home wherever we are. maya angelou says it better:
i long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever i find myself.
and to seek those places where you find your home. whether that's in the same house you grew up or a remote village in Africa or a cabin in the Appalachian mountains or a posh apartment in New York City or a dingy flat in Paris.
and to make each and every stop along the way another piece of home. to tie one end of your heart string every place you stop and the other end tightly about your heart and carry it with you wherever you go from there. all in. tied down and free . . . free to make yourself at home in the world. to know it's backroads. to be familiar with it.
so, i guess this SOMO blah blah blog is about perspective. wearing SOMObeads around your neck, near your heart. reminding you of another home you have, even if you haven't visited in a long, long time.
it's about being home. wherever that may be. all strings attached.
it's about being home. wherever that may be. all strings attached.
oh. and i guess i should mention.
i met Heidi at college in 2008. it was love at first Africa. she said it. i said it. the die was cast.
after an obvious play on the part of the holy ghost, Heidi and i co-founded SOMObeads in September 2010 and have been on this incredible journey together since. every day is an exciting adventure with my best friend - sharing individual dreams and bringing them together to create an obtainable reality. we don't see each other often, but she holds a bit of my home in her heart, as does everyone we love. and we're making so many friends along the way. like you. hehe.

Lauren and Heidi together again at a SOMO event in Houston, Texas. (After almost 2 years apart! Skype hugs are just a little awkward.) |
